Did anyone by chance catch this program last month on the History Channel?
It was an incredibly informative program. Toward the end, the focus turns to the early Christians who were forced underground. Their dwelling places were only discovered in the 1960’s.
Today at mass, I felt such a profound feeling of gratitude. To be living in this day and age, and to be able learn of our brothers and sisters in Christ who went to such great lengths to live and preserve the faith. What it must have been like for them, what great faith they must have had!
They showed an area where wine was pressed, and also the altar where mass would have been celebrated. It was also significant to me, being a former mormon, to see the cross engraved on the wall there. The LDS church discourages displaying or wearing crosses. The cross on the wall in that underground Christian dwelling, was what first came to my mind today at mass. It gave no doubt about what was important to those people. I can only hope to leave some indication of the same, at least to my own family.
