Could someone tell me how similar or different the prayers in the Magnificat magazine are from the LOTH.

I don’t subscribe but I did look at a issue when I was considering subscribing. It looks to me like the prayers are taken from the LOTH, but are only selected portions, and do not necessarily conform to the standard schedule for the LOTH. I don’t see anything wrong with it if you want a convenient abridged version, but I had been hoping that it had the complete LOTH.

So where could one pick up a complete LOTH, and at what cost?🙂

The Magnificat morning and evening readings are their own, and are not at all similar to the LOTH (other than they do recite the Magnificat of Mary, Te Deum, etc.).

In my opinion, if you are in the United States the best one to get is the one called “Christian Prayer” - the one from the Catholic Book Publishing company. This is the one that thas the specific translations that are approved for liturgical use in the U.S. Some other English speaking countries have other approved versions, and there are are versions that have not received any official approval, which are used only by particular orders, or which have been superceded by the newer versions.

The one volume version has everything needed for morining & evening prayer. The smaller and less expensive “Shorter Christian Prayer” omits some of the optional memorials but has the essential portions. If you want the entire LOTH including the office of readings, daytime, & night prayer then you need the four-volume set, also from the Catholic Book Publishing Company.

Magnificat models itself from the hours, but it is not the same thing. However, I would say it is a good way for someone to get used to regular morning and evening prayer.

I wonder if they have a book of the Compline prayers only?
I haven’t heard of a book like that but Compline prayers are static each week. If you can find one week’s worth of Compline prayers you’ll be able to use them all year round. Universalis has everything from what I can tell except the hymns. There should also be a place at the very end for a hymn to the Blessed Virgin (I often use the Salve Regina, which you can find online easily).

Thank you for the link. I think I’ll start my experimentations in LOTH with those simple, short, Compline prayers, and see how it works into my nightime schedule. 👍

Hmmmm…$200 for the Large Print edition. Hefty investment. Over in catechismclass.com, I have been exposed to the Compline prayers, which seem to be a good way to wind down from the days activities. I wonder if they have a book of the Compline prayers only?
Andruschak, I’ve just finished a small (A4 /4) compline booklet for the Latin-English Compline throughout the year (including variations for the Triduum and supplemental antiphons and hymns.). I’m just putting the finishing touches and hopefully it’ll be ready by Saturday.

If you would like to read the daily LotH including all the antiphons, intercessions, responsories and the readings that Universalis omits, in an approved translation, click on the link in my signature. The Morning through Night Prayer is taken from the 1974 translation by the heriachies of England, Australia and NZ and the Office of Readings from the 1975 ICEL US version.

P.S. the Compline on the link in the signature is slightly innacurate- I spotted a few defects when I was creating the booklet: the main one is that the Examination of conscience come before and not after the hymn. It’ll be corrected by Saturday also)

I’d be glad to buy the booklet, to put on whatever will be my prayer table (working on that). Alas, I do not have Microsoft Word, so could not open the documents in your link. But the Universalis link works, so I’ll use that for awhile and se if I can make the nightly Compline prayers an ongoing part of my ritual life

Heh, the booklet is free 🙂 But now that you mentioned it, perhaps I should consider shifting from Word to Acrobat. :hmmm:

If you PM me your email address I’ll be happy to send you the Compline prayers (if you don’t have it) on Wednesday (tomorrow I will not have much access to the computer).

AJV thanks for posting the Divine Office for us. I have one thing that may interest you and Andruschak: Open Office. The Writer program is able to open Microsoft Word (.doc) documents and save in that format. Plus there’s a convenient function to automatically export your document as a .pdf file (Adobe Acrobat). It handles slightly different than Word does but it functions the same.
