Is it praiseworthy for the laity to pray the liturgy of the hours and the office of readings? Can it also be said in common by the family?

Yes, of course. From the General Instructions:
  1. Lay groups gathering for prayer, apostolic work, or any other reason are encouraged to fulfill the Church’s duty, [103] by celebrating part of the liturgy of the hours. The laity must learn above all how in the liturgy they are adoring God the Father in spirit and in truth; [104] they should bear in mind that through public worship and prayer they reach all humanity and can contribute significantly to the salvation of the whole world. [105]

Finally, it is of great advantage for the family, the domestic sanctuary of the Church, not only to pray together to God but also to celebrate some parts of the liturgy of the hours as occasion offers, in order to enter more deeply into the life of the Church.

Whether it is “praiseworthy” or not depends on what you are looking for. Humility is always important in prayer.

However, the Liturgy of the Hours is a very powerful prayer. Many graces are associated with it. As a lay person you are under no obligation to pray it, but you can pray it as often as you like. You may also choose which of the hours you pray and when you pray it (although Morning prayer should be in the morning and Evening prayer in the evening.)

Whether it is good for the family or not depends on the age of your family. Young kids might have issues with the Office of Readings due to length. With them I would just start with Morning and/or Evening prayer. I have two young kids, and during Lent and Advent I will usually pray Evening Prayer with my entire family. During other times of the year it just depends on how much other things are going on whether I pray it by myself or with the family.

It should be noted that the indulgence requirement reads as follows:

“(C) Each time that, on the days designated by the local ordinary for the Year of Faith, … in any sacred place, they participate in a solemn celebration of the Eucharist or the Liturgy of the Hours, adding thereto the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form.”

This indulgence cannot be gained just by praying the LOTH alone in private.
