I think this is an example of how being in a setting where one can display their expertise or abilities, and be comfortable, can really make a big difference in interactions with others. For developing social skills with women, I’ll throw in my usual recommendation to take up partner dancing. Ballroom, swing or Latin, pick your poison. Classes include frequent rotation of partners so you get a moment to make small talk with women of different sizes, ages and personality types. Good dance teachers will teach men about setting the frame and exercising leadership when dancing. Dance studios will often have socials a few times a month; this is an atmosphere where it is absolutely okay to be a rank beginner still showing off his (or her) two left feet.
I am introverted and not that good looking nor do I have much charisma, women routinely look right past me, both online and in real life. I see them do it all the time, the difference is I don’t care anymore. But as a dancer, I get some respect and an occasional phone number. I have no hesitation to ask for a dance, lead her to the floor and assert my frame. This is attractive and I suspect that’s why I rarely get rejected outright for a dance anymore though I am still less verbal than most of their usual partners.
I’ve actually gone to dance classes in the past, but not much came of it and it just became to hard to continue due to conflicts with other activities. Maybe I’ll do it again at some point.
