Why are the Bishops so vocal on condemning americans that insist on the laws being followed but remain silent on the issue of the Mexican government not taking care of their poor? Catholic teaching is that we must obey the civil law. That means no hopping fences where it’s prohibited.
That’s the big issue I have, and it makes me feel so conflicted, as a Catholic, because I really do love the Church, and always try to give the Bishops the benefit of the doubt. I really have a problem w/ the Mexican Bishops criticizing American immigration policy, given the state of their country, and the fact that Mexican immigration laws are way more stringent than ours! And I’m not anti-immigration. I totally feel for people wanting to escape a horrible existance and make a better life for themself, I’m for making it easier for people to come to the U.S. legally, especially if we really do need their labor as bad as some claim (of course, others claim their actually “taking jobs” from Americans, I personally don’t know which is true), and I think immigrants enrich our culture (I’m not afraid that white people may no longer be the majority, most white people-and I am one-don’t impress me much). BUT, we do have a right to enforce the laws we have, and secure our border. Every nation has that right. The Vatican has even said that, although acknowledging that people have a right to emigrate, countries have a right to protect their borders as well. I honestly don’t know why we’re made out to be such racist xenophobic ogres.
BUT (another but), I also hate it when the media uses the sex abuse scandel as an excuse to dismiss everything the Bishops (or Pope or Magisterium) say. It’s like they don’t have a real argument, so they throw that out. The Catholic Church is no longer allowed to speak out against abortion, bc, same sex marriage, and now immigration, (which is related to that issue how?). Yes, it was horrible, the Bishops screwed up, and now they’re paying for it (along w/ the rest of us

). But if that is reason to not speak out about issues, then no church official, whatever the denomination, or public school teacher or administrator, or scout leader can have an opinion on anything, either.
Just my :twocents: + :twocents: about the issue.
In Christ,
Ellen
