“You’re against homosexuality? You’re against two people loving each other?” I find this a rather difficult objection to respond to, not necessarily so much because it has any particular intellectual strength, but because of the emotional force behind it. I struggle to find an effective response to this question which does not come off as being simply insensitive, for instance. Any thoughts?

Two people of the same-sex can love each other without being sexual. It’s called friendship.

As a celibate homosexual I find it helpful to develop very close (yet chaste) friendships with heterosexual guys my age. They’re my rock and accountability. And we love each other as best friends. It’s not the same kind of love as marriage.

But those guys really help me relate to other men, and make feel better about being a guy. And we’re pretty close but it’s still a chaste friendship.

I don’t make broad generalizations like “I’m against homosexuality.”

I’m not against people loving each other. I’m against same-sex marriage and redefinition of the family. And I believe in celibacy if you’re a homosexual and in the Church (homosexual acts are condemned). But if two people want nothing to do with the Church, and have that kind of relationship between the same-sex and aren’t radical activists and lives their lives quietly then I don’t really care.

They leave me alone; I leave them alone. God will deal with them eventually.

I have a response for that objection.
“What is love?”.

First, you can say, “not at all, I believe two people can love one another.”

Next, you can say that homosexuality in practice is not love. Homosexuality can in fact be harmful for those who practice it. The act itself is anatomically an error. There’s no procreative aspect to it.

The important thing is to win them over with Christian, fraternal charity. Let them know that you’re ultimately their friend. Cultivate that friendship with Christ and share Him with them.

Pray for me, though. I have had the misfortune to meet the most degenerate sort of homosexuals, an experience which to this day, haunts me. It wasn’t possible for me to share Christ with them as they delved so much into their depravity, they literally unthroned God in them as St. Paul described one time speaking of them. It was truly disturbing to meet those sorts, where they literally look at you just as the Sodomites did when they regarded the angel visitors. Hopefully, that won’t ever happen to you.

Yes, this is something that I struggle to answer. When they genuinely feel for each other in that way, what are we to do or think?

By homosexuality, I assume you mean homosexual intercourse and not homosexual attraction. There is an important distinction to be made.

First, I would like to point out that degeneracy is not limited to homosexuals, nor is sodomy for that matter.

That being said, Grace is the most powerful force in the universe. It is possible to be resisted, yes, we are not Calvinists, but Christ can break through even the darkest mire of sin. You have no idea how he may have used you to minister to them, even if the fruits are not visible. Do not despair for their salvation. Entrust them to God. Pray to St. Joseph for them. Christ desires to restore all things to himself, and none are outside of his capacity to do so.

I shall pray for you as you struggle with your past experience with people who have been living the gay lifestyle. May God grant you peace.

Your decision to carry this heavy cross is a beacon of light in a dark world! God bless you! 🙂

Remember the song, because the bible tells me so…

It’s not what u think or I think about homosexuality, its what the bible tells us.

Whenever someone asks such a question, just ask him/her how do you determine whether the feeling is lust or love? All too often in our permissive society the two are confused.

When we love someone, we would not want them to commit a sin, especially a mortal sin. Otherwise, it is lust and not love. Love is for the good of the other. Love is selfless.

And if you’re talking to atheists/agnostics, point out the health risks (STDs, depression, increased cancer risks, intestinal infections in gay men, low life expectancies) of the homosexual lifestyle.

Well, I’m certainly against two people sodomizing each other, that being a sin and all. “Love” is a good, properly understood, but it doesn’t require being expressed through sex or any particular sexual act. And we Catholics aren’t overly interested in “love” the sentiment. The “love” we’re interested in is the ordering of the will toward the good of another.

Correct, that is what I meant when I said "homosexuality in practice, i.e. homosexuality actitivities.

First, I would like to point out that degeneracy is not limited to homosexuals, nor is sodomy for that matter.

I never suggested otherwise. I pointed out and classified a few homosexuals as degenerate without exhausting the compass of that word. Degeneracy can of course also include thieves, prostitutes, and other manners of criminals and sinners.

One thing from Christ’s mouth to your heart, through your mouth, to my ears that I needed to hear. You’re right, Christ could have very well used me to minister to them. I will point out that I try to attune myself daily to the Holy Spirit. There are instants where, however, one wandered into a situation he just needs to get out or avoid - in this case, which was one of them, homosexuals were actively working to corrupt me, they had zero respect for personal space, and it was a very demoralizing experience. I took a seminar on defending children from predators - these homosexuals acted and reminded me very much of these predators, men who have no respect, no consideration of the person’s rights, free will, and dignity as children of God, intended for sexuality in the right way and at the right time. I have met bad men before but always could sense a conscience, at least, and thus a way to reach them. It wasn’t the case here.

I shall pray for you as you struggle with your past experience with people who have been living the gay lifestyle. May God grant you peace.
Thank you for your prayers. I need them. My replies were lengthy, but I think you ill grasped my situation. I witnessed the absence of conscience, and it’s that concept that disturbs me most.

Ah, I am sorry. Yes, the attack on an individual’s free will and autonomy is to be condemned, and I did not fully understand what you are saying. Again, you are in my prayers.

What ever happened to Platonic love?

It seems like Satin has tainted every human, non marriage, relationship with sexuality.

How do you deal with the issue when its in your family?

I have 3 cousins who are homosexuals and I love them and their life partners very much and would never condemn them for how they live. One of the 3 cousins has 4 children she has adpoted with her partner and they are a very loving and caring family. They all attend Mass every sunday as a family and I think the Chruch they attend see’s them as the loving family they are even though they have been judged harshly by a few in their church.

The 4 children are in a better place in my view than they where before and are in just as a caring and loving family as if they would have been adopted into a “traditional family”.

My entire family has always been accepting of these 3 cousins and they have never been looked at any diffrently for how they live, but loved even more because the world we live in feels reason to be the ones who judge them.

Does this acceptence within the family make us all “Bad Catholics”?
