Hi!
In the tv series Smallville Clark Kent has girls/women he loves in different ways. In the end he turns up marrying Lois lane and having a friendship will Chloe Sullivan. The thing is that when he married Lois Lane that was due to him having a friendship with her (that’s why you would marry someone). My philosophical question is about love and friendship: You can have feelings for different girls/women like Clark Kent but you only marry one of them. What is the different between the love Clark Kent has for Chloe and Lois?
How would eg. a thomistic philosopher answer this question?

:twocents: from a random internet idiot:

Our love for each other stems from our relationship with God, who loves us and who created us as relational beings, called to love.
One of the great things about human relationships is eros. This is also one of the worst things because it feels so good.
The focus can easily, many times imperceptibly, shift from other to self - mutual giving becomes mutual taking.
I would say that erotic feelings last only so long for diverse reasons; it think it is a part of their nature.
Eros assists us in loving each other, but it can also tear us apart.
It is important because it contributes to the joy of participating in the creation of a new human being.

We can appreciate and love one another as male and female without succumbing to the lure of sexual covetousness.

I have no idea about Clark Kent. But, I would say, “Superman, be careful.” It is possible that Chloe is going to look better and better compared to Lois. If so, nip it in the bud; better a few tears now, than the misery that follows.

That said, most worldly successful men have mistresses from what I’ve read. Humiliating to all, but that’s this world.
