Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue

Lovely Lady dressed in blue ----
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!

Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?

Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?

Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things-
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels’ wings

Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me ---- for you know?

Thanks for posting this. I can remember singing it in grammar school.
 
My grandfather taught this to me when I was a child and said it everynight. I still say it everynight and always think of him.
Nice to know others like it still.

What beautiful lyrics!
 
This poem is posted on my refrigerator. Monsignor Wade, our pastor at Christ the King, used to recite it every year on May 1 in honor of Our Lady. It makes me smile every time I read it. Thank you for posting it here!

I went to a parish mission once where the Redemptorist priest got up to give the homily and started off with, “Lovely Lady dressed in green, help me preach like Bishop Sheen.”

I can’t remember learning it in school. But I do remember singing “Oh Mary we crown thee with blossoms today…”
 
Thanks for posting this. My Dad, may he rest in peace, used to sing it to me before bed often when I was little. Only, he had his own version of the second verse:

*Did you bounce Him on your knee,
gently on your knee,
did you sing to Him the way
Daddy sings to me?

*My mother gave-up trying to correct us, and I still sing it his way (with “Mommy,” of course!)! 🙂

(The funny thing is that my Dad was a convert to the Faith who never really had a devotion to Our Lady and retained some of his Protestant habits…)
