Hi All,

Does anyone know of a medical test a doctor could recommend for detecting if there is a medical reason why a woman has a low libido?

This has come up with three different doctors and the answers are use pornography, masturbation, etc., typical secular answers (even coming from a Catholic gynecologist). We’d like to know if there’s anything that can be tested medically so we can make the recommendation rather than relying on the typical answers medical people throw around today.

Thanks!

Low libido in women can be caused by stress, lack of sleep, being overweight, and a sedentary lifestyle. There is not always a “medical” reason for it. I notice for me, when I began to fall into this myself, that once I began getting more sleep, getting out of the house for some much needed alone or girl time, and once I started watching what I ate (removing a major portion of carbs and cutting way down on sugar intake), I immediately regained my sex drive.

Contact the Paul VI people . What is the connection with NFP?
There are multiple reasons for low libido that won’t turn up in a medical test. There’s psychological, being tired, distracted…

Have the basic hormones ever been tested? Hormones need to be balanced in order to help each other perform their functions. This can be done with a simple blood test.

Like others have mentioned, it can be a lot of things that are not medical, but from your wording, you would just like to rule medical out as a possibility right?**

Right, this medical test would be to rule out hormones and any possible medical causes. The lack of libido has been long enough that it isn’t a sleep or stress issue, etc. Just want to make sure there isn’t anything like a thyroid test or anything that could be done.

You definitely want hormone tests. Many people, men and women, become deficient in testosterone, especially as they get older. Other hormones, such as thyroid and cortisol could be involved. If these tests come back normal, it may be challenging to do a test. Even the suggestions of masturbation and pornography don’t necessarily diagnose a low libido; rather they test the ability to act on the libido. An ability to have a sexual response to stimulation does not necessarily mean that the person has a normal drive or desire to have the sexual response.

YUP I had one done when I was married… I don’t remember what it was called, it was many many many years ago…BUT I was given antidepressants, I took them for 6 months and stopped taking them because I was not going to be tied down and made happy through artificial medications, I had strayed from GOD so I knew why I was unhappy… I started coming back to the church and thanks to GOD’s grace I was able to get myself out of my depression and back to being a happy person…BUT I had to do it on my own…I was tired of being depressed and got my life back on track…

Perhaps that’s why your wife has a low libido…Take her to a different doctor, always get second, 3rd and 4th opinions it’s the only way you can find the right treatment and help…If anything find another CATHOLIC GYN, good luck and GOD bless!

Antidepressants can have some very weird effects on libido…often drops it, but can raise it too sometimes! Also, everyone goes through periods of low and high libido in their lives. If it’s longterm, yeah, get a full rundown test…women have testosterone too, and need it as well as all the rest of our whacky hormonal mixture - it’s complicated.

If you want a higher libido, it’s probably fixable, but depression itself generally lowers libido, regardless of your sex. And if you don’t fix that bit up somewhat, well, just jumping up your sex drive could lead to worse result mentally. So talkk, hard and serious, with your regular physician and ask for a specialist. This stuff is often fixable…maybe not immediately, but you didn’t immediately get in this condition anyway, so don’t expect miracle cures…just slow, steady improvement, and if it’s not working, keep checking in, and giving samples for analysis. Help can be had.

Oh, and yeah, psychs can help a whole lot too…they really are there to help.
