The Conception of the Forunner (St. John the Baptist) celebrated September 23, was once the beginning of the liturgical year (due to Augustus) but was later moved to September 1 (likely caused by Justinian’s changes).

Although we celebrate the birth of the Theotokos at the beginning of the new liturgical year today, the earlier practice from when the year begain Sep. 23 is that the Conception of the Forerunner is the first step, and Apostle Luke is the only one to mention this in Luke 1:5-25. From the Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross, the Gospel according to St. Luke is read.

The scriptural readings per the Typikon, may be discontinuous after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and this is referred to as the Lukan Leap.
  1. The Gospel of St. Luke (nineteen weeks beginning on the Monday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, read from the thirteenth week, on Saturdays and Sundays, and The Gospel of St. Mark is read on the remaining weekdays);
  2. With the exception of the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Gospel of St. Mark is read during the Lenten period on Saturdays and Sundays.
  3. The Gospel of St. John is read from Pascha until Pentecost Sunday.
  4. The Gospel of St. Matthew (seventeen weeks beginning on the day after Pentecost - read from the twelfth week, on Saturdays and Sundays, and the Gospel of St. Mark is read on the remaining weekdays).
Luke 1 (Rheims-Challoner)
[13] But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John: [14] And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice in his nativity. [15] For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
Exaltation of the Holy Cross is September 14 (Gregorian) or September 27 (Julian)

Does your typikon vary from the above (other than Old vs New Calendar)?

Do you see the connection between the liturgical year and the Conception of the Forerunner?

Certainly, the Conception of the Forerunner is the beginning of our salvation in Christ and that is how it has always been described to me/us.
