I’ve been asked “why is Christmas celebrated in December and not sometime in Feb, March or April if the angle Gabriel was sent to Mary in June or the “Sixth” month?” My friend is an Atheist and I’m no theologian.
In the research I’ve done I can’t find an answer to this question.
I’m lost at how to respond.
Please help.
Thanks,
Raul

When Elizabeth was in the sixth month of her pregnancy. Luke’s narrative carries on from the preceding verse.

why is Christmas celebrated in December
The Church made a practice of celebrating feasts and Holy Days on those days that used to be celebrated in Pagan Festivals. We don’t know what time of year Jesus was born, but a date was chosen to celebrate 'Christ’s Mass". This date is very near the Winter Equinox, during which time Pagan festivals were held.

Because that is where the Church places it on the liturgical calendar. The liturgical calendar is not an attempt to place celebrations on any sort of historical date, although some Saints do have feast days on the days of their deaths. Most feast days are placed liturgically, not historically.

The angel Gabriel was not sent to Mary in the sixth month of the year (which BTW would not have been calculated on our modern calendar anyway).

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary in the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. And we have no details on what calendar month that would have been.

Ahhhh, this makes sense now. Ok, I’ll research what calendar was used during the time of Jesus so I can have a complete rebuttal. Thank you!

Why don’t you ask your atheist friend to copy and paste the part that they’re talking about?

Then look at the verses before it, and look at the verses after it.

Read the thing in context, rather than automatically granting someone their point.

The Jews used (and still have) their own calendar, and as far as I know, modern New Testament translations would respect that and not change it. So you just need to figure out which month that would be on the Jewish calendar (or perhaps Luke used a gentile calendar, since he wrote to them, but even that would be different than ours today).

You don’t need to know what calendar was in use by Jews (hint: Jewish lunar calendar) or Romans (hint: Julian calendar).

Because again, the verse did not say Gabriel came to Mary in the 6th month of the year, but rather in the 6th month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. And we have no idea what months or even what year Elizabeth was pregnant.

Nope, because the bible verse does not say the angel Gabriel came in a certain month, but rather in the 6th month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. We don’t know when that was, nor how they counted months of a pregnancy.

In that interesting post, Jimmy Akin answers the OP’s question twice over:

After his vision announcing the conception of John the Baptist, he returned home, and his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant (1:23-25). Then “in the sixth month” of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced the conception of Jesus (1:26-31).

… He [Luke] states the angel appeared “in the sixth month” (1:26, 36)—i.e., when Elizabeth was between five and six months pregnant.
