“And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; for he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall save it.” - Luke 9:23-24

We have to choose between God and the world. If we choose the world then we risk dying. If we choose God then our soul has a chance, a very good chance, to live forever. Our corporal bodies die either way, for a time. However, the life he is speaking of, is our soul.

“And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself,
To follow Jesus requires that we deny our natural (fallen) human instincts.
and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
We must be prepared to sacrifice all…bear suffering and all. Follow christ wherever He leads.
For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it;
Speaking of corporeal life. Save corporeal life = lose eternal life.
for he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall save it.”
Lose corporeal life for Christ’s sake = save eternal life

Thats how I read it anyway

Peace

Becoming like Christ means denying one’s own needs and putting others ahead of you. It is to focus on saving others, not yourself. Thus by denying your own needs, you ultimately find you have saved your own life through the atonement of Christ.

In essence, Christ is merely saying “do what I do,” as Christ denied himself in all things.

23 Then, speaking to all, he said, 'If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day and follow me.

24 Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, will save it.

25 What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?

Verse 25 hits the nail on the head.

Redemptive suffering in the battle away from our own selfish temptations.

And, redemptive suffering in our interactions with other people.

Discipleship is costly…I think Deitrich Bonehoeffer spoke of “cheap grace” and the “cost of discipleship”. Following Christ is a daily act…a daily choice to live within the Kingdom of God and live according to it’s precepts.

The “cross” Jesus spoke of is taken upon ourselves voluntarily…no one puts it on our backs for us…we “take it up”…willingly.
