49 (3) John answered and said, “(4) Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.”
50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; (5) for he who is not against you is for you

Why can’t all Christians read this and take it for what it is? Maybe our divisions would heal

Matthew 7:22-23
*22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’ *

The problem is, Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox are against each other.

Wow…talking about a newbie being put in his place! 🙂

I guess this exchange reinforces the belief that it’s dangerous to pick and choose passages - it’s like ripping stiches out of cloth. The **whole **thing must be held together.

Remember, Christ came to build HIS church, not churches… he commanded that we go and convert all nations… nuff said… 👍

Yes, the Bible must be taken completely within context. However, I believe you do have an excellent point regarding the differences between Christian denominations. At the very least, this passage suggests that we should see the good that those religions contribute, even if their ideas are not fully in accord with the truth.

A Protestant once asked me, “Are you saved?”. I turned and asked, “What must I do to share in everlasting life?” He came up with an answer that is not in the bible. “Accept Jesus as your personal saviour.” I responded, “No! What is the perfect answer to this question? What was Jesus answer to this question?”

The Protestant told me that Jesus taught for three years but after Christ died His teaching was obsoleted in their eyes. Now they use their interpetation of St. Paul’s post ressurection writings in which, as they see it, Christ’s teaching of obedience and good works are out and St. Paul’s “faith only” is needed, he told me. “How can you teach opposite or anti-Christ’s teachings which He commanded us to believe?”, I asked. geocities.com/athens/forum/3325/5a.htm

NAB MATTHEW 19:16
“Teacher, what good must I do to possess everlasting life?” He answered, "Why do you question me about what is good? There is One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."

Catholics “believe” in Jesus by puting into practice what He told us to do. Protestants “believe” in Jesus through their Protestant created, none biblical terminology of “accepting Jesus as your personal saviour” and throw out what Jesus taught us to believe. geocities.com/athens/forum/3325/7a.htm

So who are you going to “believe”? Jesus or the Protestants. I for one am not going to become an anti-Christ teacher. Jesus commands us to believe in Him and I will not betray His teachings for the sake of ecumenanism.

Peace in Christ,
Steven Merten
