Luke Ch 7:28 “I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

What exactly is Jesus saying here?

Is it that John is a sinner and that he must be purified in the fire of purgatory? I know that were there souls in Heaven before Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Ressurection?

Jesus cared deeply for His cousin so I do not understand this and there is no footnote in my NAB.

Thanks!

I think Jesus is both commending John and emphazing the change that is taking place - a change that John heralds. John is the last of the prophets of the old covenant, the last one to point forward to the Messiah. The Kingdom/New Covnenant has begun with the Messiah, and is of a completely different essence than the Old Covenant, so that "the least of the Kingdom is greater than the greatest of the Old. It’s a rhetorical flourish, if you will, using John’s role as the pivot point to turn the attention of His listeners toward the work He is doing.
