I’m curious if anyone knows why the Holy Father recommended that the Luminous Mysteries be prayed on Thursday?

The Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries flow in a chronological order. To keep that pattern, it seems like the Luminous mysteries would’ve been placed between the Joyful and Sorrowful.

Perhaps it was meant as a retrospective meditation? Or perhaps he knew some would be irate just for introducing new mysteries – if the Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries were switched around, he’d never hear the end of it.

I seem to remember hearing that, in part, the Luminous mysteries were assigned to Thursday in order that the Sorrowful mysteries will remain on Friday, which is a day of remembrance of Our Lord’s Passion, and they wanted to keep that as is.

I think Didi’s right, that it was so as not to move the sorrowful mysteries from Friday. If you want to keep it in chronological order, maybe you could pray both the Joyful and Luminous mysteries on Thursday ;).

My mother loves the rosary, and she loves JP 2, but she says the Joyful on Monday and Thursday, the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, the Glorious on Wednesday and Saturday, and the Luminous on Sunday.

Myself, I have the virtual rosary on my computer which is set up with the Luminous on Thursdays. For the first couple of months it did feel a bit funny to have gone from Joyful to Luminous on Thursdays, but now it seems more natural to me.

We’re both happy with our choices.
Sometimes all it takes IS time.

I always figured it was because of the Institution of the Eucharist, the Last Supper, which we commemorate on Holy Thursday.

Here is Pope John Paul II’s encyclical on the rosary URL: ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP2ROSAR.HTM (from EWTN website).

Read point 38, where the Pope explains why Thursday.
Just to quickly summarize this point: The Glorious Mysteries were always said on Wed., Sat., and Sun.; “Saturday has always had a special Marian flavour” (re: 1st Saturdays are devoted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, etc.) so the Joyous Mysteries were moved to Saturday, freeing Thursday for the Luminous Mysteries.

I believe the days that the mysteries are not absolute. Meaning, you can pray any of the mysteries on any days. I know of some people who only say the same set of mysteries every day.

True. I know many people who pray all 20 mysteries each day.
