I was reading on Martin Luther and there was a reference to Luther hating the “The General Epistle of James”

Why is this? Is it because it debunks his claims of Faith Alone?
Or is there something deeper?

Luther almost threw out the letter because it didn’t…Inspire confidence in his salvation or eternal safety. I don’t know why he didn’t throw it out. His theology wouldn’t seem so false if he had.

Just read through the epistle keepin in mind that Martin Luther taught salvation by faith ALONE (Sola Fide). In otherwords, read it through his eyes.

PAX!

Luther vs, James? 😉

Well, I hate to sound sarcastic (or do I? :))

I would have to say that Luther won, because James simply wrote an epistle. Luther, however, had the divine inspiration to deface…oops… I mean reconstruct sacred scripture as a whole.

Or did he win? Well, let me re-think this…Luther accomplished a reconstruction of the Bible, but the original is still abundantly available. Sorry, but I’d have to say James won. Not that he had to try. Actually, St. James is probably rolling his eyes at this very thread :).

I apologize, St. James. Pray for us.

They added a new SIGN! About time. Too bad it is Catholic. Wouldn’t be the same.

Actually, Luther did remove James, Hebrews, Revelation, Jude, and I believe 2 Peter for a number of years before his followers put them back in.

Aside from their otherwise Catholic ideas, the concept of infused righteousness happens to run through all 5 of those books. Many of the verses used to debunk imputed righteousness are in them, too. It also happens to be why Luther eliminated the deuterocanon and why did away with Purgatory. It wasn’t so much that he had a problem with Purgatory as it was that he had a problem with infused righteousness, from which Purgatory was a natural conclusion.

What does “epistle of straw” mean? I just don’t gets its meaning

“straw” being something of little or no value.
