Dear Forum

Im not sure whether or not i’ve commited a mortal sin. Today, An Inusrance broker came to our house, so that we could have House Insurance. After The broker measured the house, and took pictures, he started talking to my little brother. My brother and I were the only ones home (Mom, Dad and my other younger Brother, im the oldest, were gone). He started to ask some questions from him, they werent serious, questions just question kids get asked usually to make them laugh. One question in particular came forward. The broker asked jokinglly from my little brother “can your feet touch the pedals”-meaning could he drive. He asked etc., then he asked me if i was getting to the age of driving, I said I was 16, and yes i was the age of driving. In fact I told him, i had my G1. Now the problem here is my dad didnt tell the broker that I am a G1 driver (aka learners permit). There is no penalty, etc, becuase even if my dad wouldnt tell him, as long as i had my G1, i would be covered under Dads insurance. But i told him when i got my licensce, he wrote it up, wasnt mad or anything. When he was leaving after talking with me, I apoligized that my dad didnt tell him. I told him what he needed to know, although I did do it slowly,

my question is:

Did i lie and thus commit a mortal sin?

I didnt want to say anything in particular concerning my drivers licensce, but when he brought it up, i couldnt life. Did i sin here as well??

I have a new Spiritual Director. I have yet to talk to him, as my old one was transfered to another Parish. But my questions remain…

Mortal sin or not, for both questions?

first I think you need to state succinctly what this supposed lie was. It is not at all clear from your story what lie you supposedly told.

  1. Why was this insurance broker there when your parents were not home? He should not have come into the house unless an adult was present.
  2. Why was he asking about automobile insurance when he was there to give your parents a quote on home insurance?
  3. The way it works in the US is that the insurance companies actually insure the VEHICLE, not the driver, although if you do drive some of the time, your father’s rate may go up slightly. If you don’t have a car of your own, then the premiums will not increase that much.
  4. Next time tell anyone who is there on business, that they need to return when your parents are home.
  5. You did not lie, that I can tell from your recounting of the incident.

True,

Well, Im concerned about it being a lie is becuase of the fact that i didnt tell the broker right away, and i also didnt know whether or not to bring up the matter as my dad didnt tell the broker, and 🤷

I eventually did, I told him, gave him my licensce to look at and record the numbers, I apoligized at the end for my dads failing to report it etc., so I ended up being honest in the end. Although I was nervous.

Is there some alternate definition of “lie” out there? A lie is telling someone something that isn’t true. I do not see where you told any lies.

I’m still trying to understand why the broker would need this information and why you think it was wrong to not mention something that he didn’t ask about. He came, measured, and nowhere in a homeowner’s policy is there anything about driving so I really don’t understand you at all.

You also didn’t mention your height, what ate for dinner last night, or your favorite movie star. That was also not a lie. It wasn’t anything. It’s a non-thing to not bring up something that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

You are being scrupulous. Beyond scrupulous.

All true. You didn’t lie and you didn’t do anything wrong. I expect the insurance company holds their auto as well as their homeowners insurance and that would explain why the interest. Most likely he made a note of it because when you are old enough to get your own licence, you will be added to the household as a driver. Then the insurance company will be after you to sign up with them once you get your own vehicle. The internet stranger concencus is…you have nothing to worry about!

You shouldn’t tell an insurance broker anything. I read somewhere that if a person calls up an insurance company and asks a “what if” question, like “What if my toilet flooded and ruined my floor,” the insurance company will put your question in a data base. Your question will be a “red flag” that may be used to raise your premium.

Insurance companies use all kinds of things to classify people as “high risk.”

I think you shouldn’t have told them a thing. They weren’t being friendly, they were trying to find out information that could be used against you.

They shouldn’t have come to your house when your parents weren’t home.
