I wouldn’t say that you where lying to Walmart, You where honest in providing the teller with the correct pricing. In all intention, you where being mindful of the possible risk of a til not adding up at the end of the day. You were offered a much lower price for the strawberries despite your (name removed by moderator)ut and assistance at getting the correct pricing.

There is no harm in accepting a lower price for produce.

No, the superior even said it was okay. You did everything you could to pay for those strawberries. Now, if you had told me that you saw him enter the wrong price but didn’t mention it, I would be like, yeah you stole the strawberries , but you literally tried as hard as you possibly could. Don’t worry, and I agree. Scrupulousity sucks. Try and find a good priest who’ll help you with it and don’t worry 🙂

The strangest part of this is that every WalMart checker has a laminated sheet with all produce and the associated barcode right there attached to the wall by the register. #walmartfamily

Holding up a line for 6 minutes, I’m surprised there was anyone waiting in line behind you. I’d have found another check out by that point 🙂

I think almost everyone misunderstood. Perhaps i can phrase it better. I did not take the strawberries for a lower than listed price. I paid for them and purposely did not take them. It is that that made me wonder if it was a sin since it would show on their record that i bought them while in actuality i didn’t. So far i haven’t seen anyone say why it isn’t a sin besides it being the cashiers fault. However that doesn’t mean me allowing it was acceptable since i could have kept waiting. All (name removed by moderator)ut is appreciated though. Thanks, and GOD bless y’all.

  1. It cannot be a sin because you can’t accidentally sin
  2. It cannot be a sin because you are not depriving anyone of their just wage. There is no sin for creating computer errors that don’t deprive others of something–even intentional ones.
  3. It is not a sin to be foolish. Leaving food was without a doubt stupid given the error. But being stupid (to a point) is not a sin.

  1. This was not accidental. It was done unknowingly. Sin can happen without you knowing. If I were not a Christian and i killed someone but had no idea it was wrong- the sin isn’t still on me even though i didn’t know it. Also i believe the Israelites has a special sacrificed for unintentional sins.
  2. I never stated the sin was depriving someone of their just wage (stealing). Rather, i said it was lying because the system (which is by and for actual people) says that i bought something while i actually did not. (And it isn’t a specific item so it will probably be telling the company that they sold one thing twice- thus deceiving their accounting i to thinking they sold more than they did.
  3. There’s no need to call me foolish or stupid.

  1. Yeah, it was an accident. You accidentaly gave the incorrect price.
  2. You didn’t lie.
  3. You left food behind. Sorry, perhaps because I live on a shoestring budget and I can feed 4 for $60 a week I feel that leaving $1.50 on the table and leaving food behind is foolish. Perhaps you have more money than I do. I suppose if you do, then it would not be so bad. Leaving that behind would be a sin for me becuase it would be depriving my family of food.

  1. I did not give the wrong price. He put in the price himself with no (name removed by moderator)ut from me until he told me what he put in and i told him the correct price.
  2. How is it not lying to say i purchased something when I did not. I can see how it might not be because I did pay for it but also it is ping tobday that two people bought those strawberries so it might mess with the system.
  3. I understand. I see your reasoning but i think no matter if it is used for good or not, it would be a sin to take something from a company for less than it is worth. The employees are not the company, just the workers so what they say has no bearing on the price or whether or not I can take it.

Really, you need to see a priest about this scrupulosity. It sounds as if it is crippling your ability to function in the world. Prayers.

  1. Understood. To me, it read as if you said $1.25. The point still is is that there was no intention to scam or deceive. Your nodding or whatever was fine.
  2. A lie requires intent. You must intend to deceive others. You did not. There is no lie, there is no sin.
  3. No. No, it is not. Legally and morally if a shelf edge pricing store makes an error, they are required to honor it. The onus is on the store to display the right price and to ensure their computers are programmed to use that price. They are also morally obligated to train their employees well.
Plain and simple YOU are the consumer. You went to the store and should have the expectation to be able to get your items, have them scanned and pay without issue.

1 & 2. I forgotten about the intent part of lying and i believe you are right. Thank you for the explanation.
3. I don’t know if the store is obliged to sell it at shelf price or even at whatever price the cashier says. I disagree that the consumer has a right to buy it at the price he thought he was getting it at or even at whatever the cashier says (or am i misunderstanding what you said). I think since the company decided the price they determine the price regardless of what the customer or cashier thinks or does.

  1. You mentioned Walmart so I’m going to assume that you are in America. I explained it a bit above. There are 2 legal ways for stores to price their merchandice. The first, is a legacy system still used by Hobby Lobby, Kohls and thrift stores called “tagging” every item must be tagged with a price. The store must honor the price on the tag. If they mislabel the item, it’s on them.
The second is called “shelf edge” pricing is currently what most stores use. The store does not tag each item but gives it a UPC/SKU and enters that price in their computer. They place the item on the shelf and the shelf carries a sign with the price. Those prices are labeled to ensure that the customer knows the right product is placed there. So if the tag says “white bins $4.99” and there are white bins…but they are really the $9.88 fancy white bins they must honor that price even if they put the bins there in error. The wording surrounding this involves “reasonable belief”. This is very strict to ensure that stores are not tricking customers.

As far as cashiers. At a shelf edge store, a cashier is a representative of the store. Once he put the price in it was in and they are required to sell you it at the price.

That’s the law.

They gave you a good deal. Perhaps it was even God’s will that that happened. Perhaps you can use the extra money for a good purpose, like donating it to your Parish, or a charity.

I did not take the strawberries so there is no extra money. I think had that happened that would be a good suggestion though.

You know? This technically makes you a Walmart Price Slasher. 😀
