can you believe most lyric sites are illegal? then how are we supposed to know if the music has something inappropriate before we buy it or what if we do buy it and we just want to know what they’re saying? do we have to follow laws like this that just promote greed?

Why wouldn’t a song artist want the lyrics to his song put where people could read them? WOuldn’t he be proud of his artistic work?

People could read the lyrics and mentally play the music in their head. WAYYY too much like downloading.

They’re copyrighted…

That’s why in forums like this they discourage people from posting entire articles. The owner of the forum can be sued for copyright imfringement.

they already took lyricsfind down. so would it be a sin in this case? cuz u need to know if what you’re hearing is appropriate, plus people aren’t gonna go out and buy lyrics for every song.

well i think its more about companies like hal Leonard, not so much the artist.

Yes they would be illegal because they reproduce Copyrighted material. It is stated in the sheet music and in the lyrics book that comes with the CD that it is protected by copyright laws and it is illegal to reproduce it in any form (I assume that also means it’s illegal to sing it in the shower, but perhaps only if you charge people to hear you sing in the shower).

But there are two ways to get around the problem of not knowing what is in it before you buy it:
  1. The official web site of the artist will often have the lyrics available for you to view.
  2. While a web site reproducing the lyrics is doing something illegal, that doesn’t automatically make it wrong. You won’t be able to escape legal penalties if you’re caught doing it, but I’d say you won’t offend God by doing what you have to in order to filter the material your children listen to. You’re not viewing it to get some kind of financial advantage and you’re certainly not distributing it to others.
Of course, if you can stand reading it to check it, you can probably stand to listen to it instead where necessary, which would be another way of checking the contents. If you understand the lyrics, I think you would be similarly scarred by reading to them and by listening to them, so hearing the song instead of reading it might not be much worse.

What about music that is in the public domain? Lyrics sites also have words and translations of Catholic hymns or songs by Mozart, etc. The reason that people get fed up with copyright laws is that sometimes they go too far. I couldn’t care less about any of today’s artists, most of what they put out will fall off the radar before they do, but I think it is wrong as heck for artists and publishing companies to be able copyright music that never belonged to them in the first place.
