I just watched the Lady in the Water. Not great, but not bad.
Has anybody noticed that all of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are like that? Like, i expect his next movie will be called “M. Night Shyamalan’s Anti-Climax”. Or “M. Night Shyamalan’s Hunh.” Because that’s what i usually say when the movie is over. Hunh.
The Village was pretty decent and i liked Unbreakable, but i keep watching each and every one of his movies because i’m just sure the next one will be so awesome, but they never are. They are really wholesome compared to most of Hollywood’s tripe, which is endearing.
Anyone else a fan? Anyone else still waiting for his best work? I know he’ll be so great once he figures out how to write an ending.

The Sixth Sense and Signs were great . its been downhill since then. Like you I keep hoping for another hit.

He will have a real tough time topping Sixth Sense. That was incredibly well done.

Peace

I saw The Village, and thought that they let us know the wood creatures were “fake” too early.

++ I thought “Signs” was almost as poor a film as “The Da Vinci Code” - it was flabby, dull, wandered around without any sense of direction, & was entirely free of anything resembling suspense: Pauline Kael would have ripped it to atoms 🙂 It was a truly awful flick ++

So funny you posted this today; the very same day I finished the book called *The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale *by Michael Bamberger. (It was in the new book section at my library; has been out since July.)

You might like it. Bamberger had pretty unrestricted access to Night and the whole process of writing & creating the movie* Lady in the Water.* In any case, it’s a very good read!

Sixth Sense was one of the greatest movies of our time, and I hoped Shyamalan would go on getting better. Unbreakable was really good, I thought, and at the time I was impressed by Signs, though when I’ve seen it rebroadcast on TV it hasn’t held up as well. But the Village was simply awful IMHO–it was basically a hoax pulled on the audience, with no real payoff that I could see. I did not go to see Lady in the Water, though one of these days I hope to rent it or see it on TV. But it seems as if Shyamalan has been working from a steadily diminishing pool of creativity. I hope he recharges his batteries some day–one more movie like Sixth Sense in the world would be a very good thing indeed.

The only movie I dislike of his is The Village.

I’ve actually never seen any of his movies, because I am sensitive and some people warned me not to watch them, except for The Village.

My husband and I actually had this conversation a couple days ago, though :). He does not like any of the movies at all, but my mom has raved about them. She is a HUGE fan. I think it is because she sees the symbolism and literary devices he uses in them, rather than the entertainment, as she is a big English person (homeschooling, so everything is a lesson! 😉 ). She talked about how amazing each movie was (although she’s only seen - The Sixth Sense, The Village, and Signs).

I probably will never see them, but it seems there’s two sides on this and very little in between…either you love them or you hate them.

It was good but there were some gaping holes:

In the beginning the little boy’s mother brings him to Bruce Willis’s office. Huh? The kid’s dead, his mother can’t see him, right?

The timespan of the movie isn’t that clear but for days or a couple weeks on end his wife totally ignores him, they don’t exchange a single word. He doesn’t suspect something is wrong?

I’m a fan, but haven’t seen Lady in the Water. Is it on DVD yet? I rather like his endings. It’s one of the reasons I like his movies so much. They’re quiet, subtle, but satisfying. I thought no one could beat Bruce Willis as a character in Night’s films, but I think Joaquin Phoenix presents a good challenge. Two of the best scenes in movie history, is when in Signs, he’s in the closet watching the news and a handheld camera at a kid’s birthday party has captured the first sight of one of the aliens. His reaction…was just priceless. And the other, is in The Village, when he is sitting on the porch with Ivy and they have their conversation and he tells her “I will dance with you on our wedding night.”

I love his movies. I think they’re beautiful.

No, she didn’t. The first meeting between Willis and the kid took place in the kid’s home. The mother never acknowledged his presence.
He doesn’t suspect something is wrong?
Of course he does. It is abundantly clear that he does. Check the scene in the restaraunt, for just one example.

Had I been alone and able to leave, I would have walked out during The Village (the only movie I’ve been to that I would have left in the middle of). The Sixth Sense was great. I got bored with Signs and fell asleep. I’m not sure Shyamalan’s movies will get another chance with me.

Actually, I did like The Village, but still don’t understand Unbreakable. Would anyone who does, please explain? I’ve even looked at reviews on the Net hoping for some light on this movie, but nothing sheds any light.

Well, I watched Lady in the Water and it is definitely my least favorite. I don’t care to watch it again. Paul Giamatti (sp?) was great in it though.

Hi! I didn’t see “The Village” neither “Lady In the Water”, but I saw “The Sixth Sense” and I liked it. It is a very cool movie!
