I’m offering to buy the MTF Missal (Regal Edition) for our parish. The men’s gregorian chant group that I sing in owns the Latin Missal (2002) they put out, and it is magnificent!

We in our parish ordered ours already. I think many parishes pre-ordered them so that they would have them by the Oct shipping date. A generous parishioner gave us the money to buy them.

It also depends on the country. Here in Canada the Conference of Bishops’ publication department publishes the Roman Missal. Because dioceses get a discount on most things purchased from CCCB, if things proceed as normal, our diocese will do a bulk purchase of the Third Typical Edition, an altar version for each parish unless the parish specifies something different, and have them shipped to directly to us.
When I was talking to the guy from CCCB at the end of May he said they still had to go through 5 proofs before they printed the final version and that our RM wouldn’t be available for order until late October.

We’re encouraged to prepare for Mass by reading the readings and other propers beforehand. Having a Missal makes this much easier and lends it more of a sense of the sacred (as opposed to reading online, which I admit to doing).

Dumb question: is the Magnificat Chapel edition (the one I’m leaning towards getting) meant for following along by the average Joe Pewsitter, or is it for priests? What do they mean by “Chapel” edition? I couldn’t figure it out from the Magnificat website.

It’s for the priest to use at a smaller altar, like a chapel. The one that you want is the one that contains the readings. To my knowledge, the one that is out there for pre-purchase is the one by the Midwest Theological Forum; however, the leather will set you back $99.

Alas, our Diocese is purchasing them for the Parishes to include our Campus Ministry so I guess I won’t be donating one.It would be very nice of you, but tell them right away so they don’t buy one
Some here have suggested purchasing a personal Missal for the readings. That doesn’t make too much sense to me. It really isn’t hard to look up the daily or weekly readings in the Bible.

The CTS has one; it’s called the study edition. It sells for about $81. Now, the only caveat is that it has the national propers for the UK, Wales, Scotland and Australia. It is similar in type and quality to its more expensive sisters. The MTF Daily Roman Missal is what you might want to consider since it is hand-held.

I don’t think anyone makes a Latin hand missal for the OF.
The closest you will get to an in-print English-Latin “hand missal” is either the Gregorian Missal from the Monks of Solesmes, the Mass of Vatican II worship aid from Ignatius Press, or the Daily Roman Missal from Scepter Press.
the problem is, with the changes in the translation coming down, the Gregorian Missal and the DRM are being redone. The MoV2 worship aid doesn’t use the official English translations. They have their own translation and they assume you are only using the worship aid for a Latin OF Mass and not using their English for the actual words of the Mass.

I believe the parish book of chant also has the order of Mass in Latin for the OF, with an unofficial english translation that is quite close to the “new translation.”

Thanks. There are a couple of websites which I can print off and create a booklet from. But it would be nice to have an actual Missal which I can take to an OF of any language.

Will there be a PERSONAL missal that we can purchase and carry to Mass… like the ones we had back in the 60’s?
All I can find are larger chapel editions.

You will be able to buy a personal-use Missal for yourself. Note the future tense.
The ones you can find online NOW are only the ones for the priest to use at Mass (sure, anyone can buy one, but I mean what they’re designed for). The USCCB will not allow the publishers to ship them yet. At the moment they’re only taking pre-orders. The reason why you can find these online is that parishes need to order them now and can’t wait until the last minute.
As for as a personal Missal goes (and that is, after all, what you’re asking):
A familiar version is the “St Joseph Sunday Missal” which might even be the one you have now or remember from the 60s. The publisher (Catholic Book Publishing) will be printing new ones for late 2011. I’ve already contacted them and inquired about it. At the moment, they’re not yet offering them for-sale on their website. They will be offered sometime in the near future.
