I would like to know how to make a Novena. I understand it is made over a nine day period. What are the steps

There are no specific ‘steps’ as such - you simply pray the prayer(s) of the novena as specified once a day over the nine days (unless some other time period is specified).

There are a variety of novenas you can make - did you have a particular one in mind?
I am making a nine hours prayer to the Divine Child Jesus today - I’m in the middle of the 3rd hour. This particular novena is said at the same time each hour for nine consecutive hours.
The thing with novenas is that is would be easy to fall into superstition. If the novena that you want to pray doesn’t say specifically, you can say it however you like. The commitment of a novena involves discipline. This adds power to the prayer, but discipline is not the source of the power - we all know where that comes from!
I heard that Mother Teresa used to say the Memorare nine times in Thanksgiving for the petition she was seeking!
