I had heard about the man in the red bandana who had saved lives on 911 but never knew his name. My 11 year old granddaughter wrote a tribute to him as a school assignment and shared it with me. It was a brief bio of his life and story behind his red bandana. I commented to her that by her story she keeps his memory alive in the hearts and minds of those who read it. I’d like to share his story with this from ESPN. We must never forget.

That man, Welles Crowther, was a true hero.

Good video.

Eternal rest grant unto Welles Crowther, O Lord,
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Yes, a hero. My granddaughter concluded her tribute with the following: “He is remembered today as a hero all over the country and to the families of the people he saved. His story changed the world and so many lives and continues to do that every day. He truly is a hero to us all.” His sacrifice definitely touched my granddaughter’s young soul. The school assignment was just to write something about what occurred on 9/11/2001and from her own research she chose to write about Welles. She enlightened my perception of the event and I am sure she did for her classmates too.

My DIL sent me a message that a local friend found Welles’ sister on FB and sent her a private message that ‘Welles’ legacy lives on’ in the heart and soul of an 11 year old girl. She explained how a school assignment lead her to be inspired to write about his heroic efforts to save other’s lives that ultimately cost him his own. This in turn has helped to secure Welles memory in the minds of those who did not know about this sacrifice on 9/11/2001.
