Mantilla Question

Hi! So glad you asked! You are, of course, welcome to wear a head covering of some kind in Church. But it is totally optional. Many on these boards prefer to wear some head covering if they are women, but many others, myself included, never wear one or only on a rare basis. The only “rule” to follow if you do wear some kind of head gear is to ensure it is tasteful and in accordance with your style (which is ideally modest), and to avoid anything that would suggest a religious veil (sisters). Headgear can be immodest if it is too out of place. Because there is nothing inherently more holy about wearing a hat or mantilla or scarf or fascinator or whatever upon one’s head, (and the same could be said about wearing slacks vs. skirts), it really is up to you as to whether you want something on top your head or not, as the Church does not regulate this.*

*For full disclosure, I do wear a black mantilla on occasion for things like private audiences with the Pope and when protocol calls for it. Most women will not need to worry about this type of thing. I also am figuring out a way of possibly refashioning my bridal veil for use at Mass for my anniversaries, but that’s a whole nother topic.

That would really get you stared at. It is far too big. And white looks like a bedspread, imo.

OP, if you really feel you must buy something (as opposed to using a scarf you already have), go for a discreet small black one. You don’t want to stand out.

Not that I’m saying anyone would be nasty to you for showing devotion, don’t think that. But because you are aiming to please God and He likes good deeds done in secret.

But I would repeat what someone has already said, it’s purely voluntary to wear a headcovering. Personally, i would aim to blend in.

As far as “blending in” I picked this (i may go smaller though I havent purchased it yet) would be in accordance wit hwhat some other women in my Church wear. I’m not going to stand out too terribly 😃

I just thought perhaps you might feel more at ease with a scarf that you just pull up a bit to cover your head as opposed to a mantilla, which as someone else noted, were never really popular outside Latin countries until Jackie Kennedy wore one to Mass. Prior to that most ladies wore hats. Nowadays, hats kind of stick out too though. I think scarves might be the least “obvious” option–but then again, who cares? If you feel called to do this to glorify the Lord, no reason to be shy about it or disguise it. People really don’t look at us nearly as much as we imagine they do. They are all too busy worrying someone is looking at them, lol.

🙂 thank you! and thanks for the suggestions your right! but i am going to go with the mantilla:) i just cant see myself wearing a scarf/hat. but then again a year ago i wouldnt have been able to see myself as a future Catholic :o

LOL, you can also turn off the email notifications. When you post at the bottom there is a drop down box with the default as instant email notifications, I always change it to no email notifications (but you can also do daily or weekly if you like getting the notifications) and then just check my subscribed thread under the profile drop down above. 👍

I am 14 and no one in my parish wears one. I go to Sat. Mass and no one wheres one on Saturday, but I’ve seen some older ladies wearing them on a Friday mass. So would it be acceptable to wear one on Sat.? I really want to. Thanks:)

I am confused. :confused: No one wears one or this is in accordance with what some other women wear???

No one wears them at Satursay Mass, but the women i saw wearing them Friday wore something similar to this 🙂
 
I wear some kind of covering no matter if its a Daily Mass or Sunday (or Saturday evening) Mass. I own a nice hat, several mantillas and a few scarves. Feel free to choose what ever works best for you. Perhaps, you may inspire others to begin to wear a head covering.
