Many non catholics question Peter being a Pope

And the point is what exactly?:confused: Protestants do not even recognize the authority of the Holy Father. They generally will stop at nothing to discredit the Catholic faith.

The point is they want to make a point. I don’t think a Protestant realizes what the Catholic faith history is about and how original it really is and how theirs was born from those that flew Jesus’ coop. We can’t pooh, pooh, them away. They know not what they do.
 
I think a lot of it comes down to semantics, and that that part of it is really just silly.

I suppose what might be said is this - The Pope is just another name for the Bishop of Rome, and it also tells that he has a special place of some kind compared to other Bishops. But it seems clear that the word wasn’t always used. So I guess the argument some people have it that the concept of the Pope having a special role also didn’t arise until later.

But that is hard to show to my mind. It could be entirely possible the concept could exist earlier than the word. And I don’t think anyone disagrees that there was development in the understanding of the role of the Pope.

Now, some people clearly think that the whole idea was a mistake, and I guess they might also argue then that St Peter was also not a Pope, since he wold not likely have been part of the misunderstanding.

I don’t understand why an apostle could not also be a Bishop - perhaps someone could explain that line of thought?
 
There are three religious truths:
  1. Jews don’t recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
  2. Protestants don’t recognize the authority of the Pope.
  3. Baptists don’t recognize each other in Hooters or at the liquor store.

Believe it or not they know exactly what they do, whether or not you want to believe it. They consciously reject the Catholic faith and have done so since for over 500 years. They know by and large that their faiths came out of the Catholic Church and they know, and I use that term in sarcasm, that the Catholic faith is defective and incomplete.

So I as a general rule don’t pay a lot of attention to what they say and do. I feel sorry for them and pray that they will return to the faith, but I am not optimistic that it will happen any time soon, if at all.

Do they actually reject the Catholic faith?

Or do they reject what they think the Catholic faith is (as Abp. Fulton Sheen said)?

Thanks Ellen for sharing. I do want the moderator to know, it’s just a bit of humor and appreciated I’m sure. My best friend growing up lived near me. But my Catholic classmates, going to Catholic grade school, did not live around me, so my best buddies were Southern Baptists who went to public school and they were a blast and so these, my best friends moved away pre high school. Kind of sad for me. I liked those good ole boys and their humor at 2 to 13 years old we were growing up. I thought their parents were very strict and harsh but they must of thought of me as some staunch Catholic. They were hell fire and brimstone as to parents and if they were not home on time, look out, but those friends were the devil may care and so liberal relief for me. Lots of fun really. I enjoyed those Southern Baptist friends more than I did the ones I went to school with. They had root in NC and probably moved back to that area.

Well they reject the authority of the Pope as well as his infallibility in the areas of faith and morals.
They reject the Magesterium of the Church and the concept of Apostolic succession
They reject the reality of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
They reject the reality of transubstantiation
They reject the reality that in receiving Holy Communion we receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ
They reject the role of the Blessed Virgin the scheme of salvation
They reject the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
They reject the Immaculate Conception
They reject all of the sacraments except for baptism, and even in that, they don’t see it as a sacrament but merely an initiation into the community for the most part.
They reject the sacrament of reconciliation as practiced by the Church.
They reject the intercession of saints and view prayers to them and to the Blessed Virgin as well, to be idol worship and paganistic.

So from just these few examples and there are a lot more, it seems pretty apparent to me that they reject the Catholic faith and Catholic teaching pretty much in its entirity.

As far as the late Bishop Futon Sheen, I believe the quote that you are referring to was the following;

There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church.

There is a difference in hating and rejecting. You can reject without hate and vice versa.

I never said that they hate the Catholic Church. I only said that most of them reject it.
