Mar. 12 - Wk 2 - Day 2 - seeking understanding of Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In seeking to acquire an understanding of Mary, this morning, I read from St. Louis’ Chapter 4 in True Devotion, in which he wrote:

1. The Blessed Virgin, mother of gentleness and mercy, never allows herself to be surpassed in love and generosity. When she sees someone giving himself entirely to her in order to honour and serve her, and depriving himself of what he prizes most in order to adorn her, she gives herself completely in a wondrous manner to him. She engulfs him in the ocean of her graces, adorns him with her merits, supports him with her power, enlightens him with her light, and fills him with her love. She shares her virtues with him - her humility, faith, purity, etc. She makes up for his failings and becomes his representative with Jesus. Just as one who is consecrated belongs entirely to Mary, so Mary belongs entirely to him. We can truthfully say of this perfect servant and child of Mary what St. John in his gospel says of himself, “He took her for his own.”

Mary, immaculately conceived and full of grace, loves God with her whole heart, and soul, and mind and strength and loves us as the children He gave her from the cross. Understanding Mary is to see one who like her Son Jesus, said “Yes” to God throughout her life on this earth. How beautiful our Mother is! Let us continue to pray to the Holy Spirit for the graces we need to understand and love her more, that through her intercession and by the power of the Holy Spirit we may know and love God more and more as she did on this earth.

1. Each day of the second week they should endeavour in all their prayers and works to acquire an understanding of the Blessed Virgin and ask the Holy Spirit for this grace. They may read and meditate upon what we have already said about her. They should recite daily the Litany of the Holy Spirit and the Ave Maris Stella as during the first week. In addition they will say at least five decades of the Rosary for greater understanding of Mary.

That is one of the quotations which captivated me when I first read True Devotion to Mary.

The idea that we give ourselves completely to Mary, and she gives herself completely to us.

What could be more beautiful than a total union with the Trinity through Mary?

And I’m still thinking about that beautiful scene from the Lord of the Rings.

“What grace is given me, let it pass to him. Let him be spared”.

She is so beautiful and good.

How wonderful, inexpressible, to have the Queen of all that is, to be uniquely, personally, particularly, our own Mother!

Yes, dear brother Pat,

“Inexpressible” is probably the best word in describing how wonderful it is to have Mary for our Mother. Yet, it is still wonderful to read and share whatever praise God inspires in us for our Mother. He alone can give us the words we need – for He alone knows All her beauty.

Yes, Dear big Sister Maria Christi,

I think no comparison can show how much Our Mother loves God, and how much she loves each one of us, uniquely.

But St. Alphonsus Liguori, a Doctor of the Church, says she loved God in the first instant of her creation more than all the rest of creation has loved God or ever will love God.

And her love for each of us so surpasses the love of all mothers, that we cannot understand it.

Yet despite the greatness of the Queen of Heaven, she remains infinitely beneath God, and completely humble before him.

Her only goal is to unite us to the Trinity of Infinite Love and Mercy!
