Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member and second-eldest daughter of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for “The Sound of Music,” has died. She was 99.
Regardless, sad to hear of her passing. RIP and Lord have mercy!Von Trapp died at her home in Vermont on Tuesday, according to her brother Johannes von Trapp.
Well spotted! Johannes was one of three children born to Georg and Maria (the ex-nun Maria). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_von_TrappSomething is amiss here…

It was indeed, but they couldn’t sing like Julie Andrews.I had no clue that this was a real family.

Born Maria Augusta KutscheraThe book was later adapted into The Sound of Music, the successful Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which resulted in a popular U.S. motion picture. The Sound of Music, with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, opened on Broadway in the fall of 1959, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. It was a success, running for more than three years. The film version set box office records, and she received about $500,000 ($4.05 million today) in royalties.[4] Maria von Trapp makes a cameo appearance in the movie version of The Sound of Music (1965). She’s kneeling at a kneeler with another nun while you hear the nuns singing at the beginning of the movie.] For an instant, she, her daughter Rosmarie, and Werner’s daughter Barbara can be seen walking past an archway during the song, “I Have Confidence”, at the line, “I must stop these doubts, all these worries/If I don’t, I just know I’ll turn back.”[13] I never noticed that. I’ll have to look for it.
] Maria von Trapp sang “Edelweiss” with Julie Andrews on The Julie Andrews Hour in 1973.
This Maria was Georg’s daughter by his first wife. Supposedly, she was represented by the character “Louisa” in the film.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_von_Trapp

Indeed! There were certain “adaptations” to their story made for the sake of the musical, such as the names & number of children and the relative time span covered by events, and whatever else goes into making a good show (like apparently the father wasn’t nearly so stern). But I’ve seen their descendants singing on TV.I had no clue that this was a real family.
