Does the Church have any problem with the use of marijuana for recreational use, assuming it’s used in a country where it’s legal?

I am curious because the Church has no problem with alcohol in moderation, while marijuana is arguably less harmful than alcohol.

Don’t worry, my goal is not to justify getting stoned. :hypno:

I don’t know if legality in the the individual country has much to do with it. For example, abortion is perfectly legal in the U.S., but obviously the Church is against it.

I would posit that the Church would view the use of marijuana for entertainment sinful simply because it greatly alters ones state of mind, much as a excessive drinking does. People use pot to get high. That’s a bit different than the pleasure of a glass of wine at dinner.

A few glasses of wine would normally have a greater impact than several puffs of marijuana. Both could be done for the same reason: a pleasurable feeling. (…and do so in moderation, if there is such a thing.)

As someone who knows the effect of many drugs first hand, I can assure you that heavy drinking is far more dangerous than heavy marijuana smoking. Both are morally reprehensible; that’s not my point. (I used to be living in a lot of darkness.)

I just wasn’t sure if the church officially spoke on this.
 
It’s true that there would not be anything qualitatively different between marijuana and alcohol as far as morality goes. The question is what kind of use would be within the range allowed by the virtue of Temperance.

Yes, this is the angle I’m approaching it from. I don’t know of the Church saying otherwise, specifically concerning Marijuana.

When it comes to other drugs: LSD, PCP, MDA, etc… , these drugs are very dangerous, and cannot be viewed in the same way.
 
My brother is a deacon in his 7 year of seminary (FSSP) and will be ordained next year.

I sent him a news story recently concerning Khat, which is used primarly in Somalia (Go Rangers!)

Here is his response:

  2. Deprive you of the use of reason
  3. Have a high chance of addiction
Lots of drugs banned by the US Gov’t aren’t immoral, they’re just illegal. But unless there is a serious reason not to, we should follow the laws of our country. Also, most people are not virtuous enough to use recreational drugs responsibly."*

Since there is no serious reason to use an illegal drug, I think that means we are morally obligated not too.

Now the question is, follow the laws of YOUR/OUR country, or the country you happen to be in at the moment? That I cannot answer.

I do know federal and state level governments do not care in which country you used said illegal drug, they will still hold it against you.
 
I know this will not be a “politically correct” answer, but my view has always been that a gentle high from a puff, or a glass of wine or beer is a gift from God…

Again, all things in moderation.

As with alcohol, surely this is a case of moderation, and legality. If it’s legal, and you aren’t going to end up an addict, why shouldn’t you be allowed a spliff or 2? It’s a double standard if we forbid it and not alcohol, just cos middle-aged people drink wine and don’t smoke weed (generalisation warning)!!
