At Mass, on 2/11/06, we were told that when Jesus encountered the leper, and was moved with “pity,” that he was actually angry. We were told that in the original writings the word for “angry” was the same as the one for “pity.” We were told that in later translations, bibilical scholars chose to use “pity” as it seemed nicer.
Were pity and anger interchangeable? If so, then at other points in the Gospel, how do we know if it should be pity or anger?
This was really confusing to my boys.
Thank you!
God Bless,
Margarete
