Mark 10: 17-19

A guy I was talking to brought this quote up in order to discourage Jesus’ divinity. How exactly is this explained? Jesus denies being God by virtue of the fact that he does not want to be called good. I know there must be something obvious that I’m missing, but I can’t figure it out for the life of me .

Just a side note, the guy I was talking to believes that Jesus is Michael the Archangel in human form. Aside from a number of off-the-wall beliefs he had, I found this the most skewed.

It’s examples like these that only serve to further enforce the fact (in my mind) that men should not try to decide their beliefs on personal interpretation.

Well, the best explination that comes by me, is that Jesus himself stated via parable form, that He who puts himself first shall be last, and he who puts himself last shall be first, obviously, those weren’t his exact words, but something along those lines.

To the part of Jesus being Michael the Archangel in human form to all I can say to that is. Lol.

Later though he stated he was indeed the Christ messiah, the son of God, and God himself at several different intervals in time, though for the most part he put it in a sublime message rather than outright.

Speaking a little off topic, I was wondering if I could get an explination as to the latin at the end of your post, I speak no language other than English, and even in that, my grammer stinks. Anyway I’d be much oblidged if you could help me out.

The *In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti *is just “in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit”

I put it in my sig only because it is one of the strongest phrases ever created for me. It sounds so absolute and powerful that it inspires me to continue in my faith. I have no idea why, really, just very powerful in my opinion.

In Mark 10:17-19, Jesus does not deny his divinity but he says that the adjective “good” should only be applied to God. Therefore, when Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” in John 10:11, Jesus is proclaiming his divinity.

It is a Mormon belief or doctrine about St. Michael. You wont get anywhere with a Mormon explaining and trying to interpret any verses from scripture as they follow they own doctrine that their prophet Joseph Smith created from his bizzare theories**.

If He was not divine, why would He later in this chapter tell our Sons of Thunder boys (James & John, sons of Zeb) that the place of glory to His left and right was already prepared for others?

Throughout this chapter, Christ is reminding folks that the path to heaven doesn’t lie in earthly things. One possible consideration is that the rich man saw Jesus the same way some California folks view Deepak Chopra as the guru of spiritual enlightenment. Christ may have simply been telling this fellow not to be enamored by His earthly personhood, but rather focus on His heavenly Father.

Notice when Christ told him to give up everything to follow Him, the man went away disappointed. Suddenly Christ lost His luster with this guy…who probably turned to ole Deepak or maybe even started beating his chest with Tony Robbins.

Your friend may have a wee bit of an issue realizing that one has to read the bible keeping context and the audience it was written for in mind.
