Wasn’t he talking about the second coming of Christ. That hasn’t happened yet, so haven’t people of that generation passed away?

most likely the topic was the destruction of the temple in 70AD … a generation was 40 years in the parlance of the day ~30 AD +40 = 70

He meant this lineage, the human race, with reference to the tribulation (during which many people will think that the human race is about to pass away)
and perhaps he also meant the current generation (of his time), with reference to the Fall of Jerusalem.
So there may be a dual meaning.
