38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is for us.

I may be assuming a little too much but do you think that todays gospel reading is talking about the evangelicals/protestants. I don’t mean to imply that they are not followers of Jesus but their church does not come for the apostolic succession . And that Jesus wants unity.
 
…i would read that as any christian unaware of the truth of the Catholic Church… or any non-christian ignorant of Christ and his church…IMHO

It could be applied to Protestants. However, remember that elsewhere Christ states that “whoever is not for us is against us.” It’s not a contradiction (the context is different), but it implies a limit to how unified Christians are who are not in the Church that Christ founded. Christ’s point here is that good works done in His name, whether by ‘official’ followers or not, further the will of God.
