While I’ve been praying the current form of the Maronite Divine Office (“Prayer of the Faithful”) for a few years now, I’m curious to learn more about it. Particularly I’d like to know if there is traditionally some form of cycle for praying the Psalms, or if the Psalms have always been limited in number and “static” in the sense that the same ones are prayed daily.

Help from my fellow Maronites is greatly appreciated! 😃

This is a good question. I don’t know, but this is what I read in the front of volume 1.

In the foreword to volume 1, His Excellency Archbishop Zayek says, “The Divine Office of the West Syrians, which includes that of the Maronite Church, contains a select number of psalms and a great number of variety of hymns, canticles, homilies and prayers.”
There isn’t a source given (not that I don’t believe Archbishop Zayek (God rest his soul)), but, maybe someone will be able to give more info.

Maybe there isn’t a tradition of reciting all the psalms?

Like I said, I have no idea other than what I found in the front of volume 1.

Joseph

“Lord have mercy on us and save us.”

For the West Syriac Tradition, this is a pretty comprehensive text:

I know the Syriac Orthodox, Malankara Orthodox, Syro-Malankara Catholics, and Syriac Catholics follow this cycle. From my understanding, the Maronite cycle is slightly different because it incorporates some East Syriac elements.
Thank you for sharing that link! Looks very interesting.
