I have read a number of posts on here and seem to have a better grasp on my current suituation. However, I wanted to check and see if I correctly understand how to proceed. I received communion and confirmation in the catholic church but have not been a practicing Catholic for at least 18 years. I married 7 years ago. My wife has never been baptized but now desires to become Catholic. I am scheduled to reconcile in a few days by making a good confession, and my wife is taking steps to become Catholic. After making a good confession, can I recieve communion, or do I need to wait until our marriage is in good standing?

Check this out:

If you make a good confession and receive absolution, then you should be able to receive communion afterwards. If your marriage is invalid, and you plan on continuing marital relations, then you probably need to wait until it is “in good standing.” Obviously, your confessor should be able to clear this up for your specific situation, so go ahead and ask while you’re in there.

My understanding is that you can resume receiving the eucharist after making a good confession but before your marriage is convalidated only if you stop marital relations with your wife and live like roomates basically. You don’t have to wait until your wife is Catholic to have your marriage convalidated assuming there is nothing else standing in your way (like either of you being previously married). I would speak with my priest as soon as possible.

Patrickg, I too was away from the Church for many years. I was married outside of the Catholic Church so when I came back I went to confession and then my priest said that my marriage was not valid until we had it convalidated in the Church. I was not allowed to receive communion until we had our marriage convalidated. My husband is not religious at all now but he was baptized so it made the process very easy. You should talk to your priest about this since everyone’s situation is not the same. Welcome back! It is wonderful that your wife will soon be Catholic too!

Thank you for all of the well wishes and replies. I will be sure and ask at my confession, but your replies have helped to reduce some anxiety in the meantime.

God Bless

Welcome back. Welcome to your wife. You also need to get her into RCIA immediately so that she can receive her Sacraments. God bless. Do you have children?
