My sister-in-law (who is Catholic) is marrying a man who is Assembly of God. They are getting married at his church *without *a dispensation. Please clarify a few things for me (I feel I need to make sure she knows what she’s getting herself into when she marries this man). Will theirs be a sacramental marriage? If not, should she receive Holy Communion without the marriage being convalidated?

Thanks

No, her Marriage will not be a Sacramental Marriage or any other Marriage, except a legal one for civil purposes only.

As far as the Church is concerned she would not be Married to the man she would be living with. Which would also be a serious sin among other things.

That would also be correct she would not be able to approach Holy Communion, or any other Sacraments for that matter.

Thanks, Br. Rich. I am so concerned about her. I’m really upset because I feel like she’s giving up her Catholic faith just so she can be married and possibly have children (not a good reason in my book).

She is!

I also married a non-denominational Christian out of the Church.A friend of mine, who is a deacon and will be ordained a priest at the end of the year, told me that this is a primitive view of marriage(i.e this idea of an invalid marriage). So what is the truth?

Primitive view as in “old” view, of course, as old as the Church. But still valid and accurate according to the 1983 code of Canon Law.

A transitional deacon who seems not to have been properly educated in the Canon Law pertaining to marriage. The latest set of laws was promulgated in I think 1983. So 1983 is primitive? I hope as a new priest he is not turned loose on my parish. Lord have mercy on his parishioners.
