Marriage Spirituality

I’d like to start a discussion about helping our spouses get into Heaven.

I am married to a non-catholic and have been for over 20 years. We did have our marriage blessed in the Catholic church about 4 years after we were married.

We’ve had our struggles about Catholicism.

I am devoted to Mass and being an active member of our parish as well as attending retreats, etc.

My husband has a strong moral compass that I respect and admire.

I have been reading about how we are supposed to help get our spouses into Heaven. Does this mean that our spouse has to become Catholic or for that matter, go to church? People often tell me, “be patient,” “he will come around,” etc. Thing is, I don’t believe my husband will ever become Catholic and doing so is a mute point in our relationship.

I wonder if I am being remiss in my spiritual obligations.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s husband was a Protestant and died a Protestant. I have never read anywhere where she was counseled by her numerous sp dir. that her husband didn’t make it to heaven. I think if we are “one flesh,” we are one flesh and our prayers for our spouse do not go unheard.
