I was ready to cancel my Netflix subscription when I saw the release of Marriage Story. I was intrigued because my husband and I used to do pre-Cana when marriage rates were higher. I also wanted to see a grown-up Scarlett Johansson. (I did not know that Adam Driver was from the Star Wars movies, unlike my husband and son), although I was excited to see he grew up very close to where I went to college (I didn’t detect an midwestern accent either).
This movie was wonderfully done in depicting how ugly divorce can be (as I have sadly experienced from several friends and/or former classmates of my son),
I watched it twice—once alone and once with my husband. My life has been very stress-filled, and watching it alone allowed me to appreciate the rock my husband has been throughout my son’s cancer and my dad’s failing mind. I have him the biggest hug and apology for the times I projected anger onto him. I even told my therapist what a difference it made.
I hope couples can watch this alone and together and really talk about it…whether you are engaged, happily married or on the brink of divorce. While I didn’t like some of word choices, I saw myself in each of the main characters. I am not going to say anything else. Even if you join Netflix and quit it after the trial period, the hassle is worth it. I don’t often say that about movies. But I am about to watch it again.
God bless.
