My fiance and I will be meeting with the priest soon to speak with him about performing our marriage ceremony. I am Catholic, and he is protestant. We know that the priest is going to ask us questions prior to getting married. Can anyone tell us what kind of questions that he will ask?

Every priest is different, but I would think that he would ask you if you intend to follow the Church’s requirement that you raise your children in the Catholic faith, and that your hubby-to-be would be supportive of that. If I was the priest, I would ask many questions, also including that the non-Catholic spouse give his full support of the Catholic spouse to celebrate her Catholic Faith to the fullest.

I’ve known many many couples where one spouse was not Catholic, and if the other Catholic spouse is totally dedicated to the Church’s teaching, well, I have seen a lot of difficulty. I would hope that the priest addresses this. As an example: imagine that the Catholic spouse wishes to attend Mass everyday -as encouraged by both Popes JP2 and Benenedict, -will the non-Catholic spouse be totally supportive? And when you want to passionately share the exitement of your faith with hubby, can/will he be able to enthusiastically share in *your *enthusiasm? Just some -important- thoughts that I hope you consider, and not because your priest may ask the questions.

From many situations that I am personally aware of, I truly hope that you will give these questions due consideration. God bless you.
