It will not be sacramental. It will most likely be valid in the eyes of the state, and in the eyes of the Islamists, assuming they have complied with both state and Islamic laws.

As to the issue of what is required of your son, that is a question too complex for much of anyone but a Canon lawyer to answer, and you have not given enough details for them to answer, I suspect.
The general rule is that if somone has renounced the Catholic faith (and conversion I beleive satisfies that requirement) then they are no longer bound by the Catholic form. whether that applies here I can’t answer.

I just wanted to say that I am very sorry to hear about your son. I have just added both of you to my prayer list.

Thank you. I appreciate all the prayers we can get. Our son converted to Islam about two years ago. Of all the faiths, he chose one that is the hardest for me to accept. Bless you.

To be out from under the Catholic Canon Law he must submit a letter to the local Bishop formally leaving the Church. Once that is done he is no longer bound and from the Church’s viewpoint his marriage will be valid as well as legal.

I thought that formally converting to another faith was sufficient. Is the letter the only method considered?
