  1. ABOVE ALL - I PRAY DAILY THAT OUR POPE WILL EXCOMUNICATE PEDOFILE PRIESTS IN ORDER TO CLEANSE OUR CHURCH. You never heard of a pedofile priest in the Eastern Rite.

The Eastern Orthodox Church has been rocked by such scandals in recent years (especially in Greece), just as the Catholic Church has. You haven’t heard much about it because the Orthodox Church is a tiny and unnoticed minority in this country, and Eastern Catholics are even smaller, but there have been some very, very damning things committed, covered up, and then brought to light. 😦

Sadly, a married priesthood is absolutely no cure for such scandal, as the Orthodox Churches demonstrate.

BTW, this is NOT an attack on the Orthodox Churches. I bring this up only to point out that the Devil attacks all clergy and faithful, and human policies (such as married/celibate clergy) are no cure against it.

Peace and God bless!

Not only in the East but in Protestant denominations as well. Marriage is no guarantee of protection from pedophelia.

Right, marriage does not guarantee freedom from pedophilia or liaisons with post-pubescents (which I understand is in fact much of the “pedophilia” in the Catholic Church). Some men who are married (to a woman) end up having sexual tendencies for boys, adolescents, other men, etc. I knew a Protestant pastor growing up who was married, had two children, and then divorced and ended up living with his adult male boyfriend. The last Orthodox pastor at my parish pled no-contest to pedophilia related charges. The bishop defrocked him upon hearing this.

It’s important to make sure that men considering the priesthood, married and unmarried, do not have disordered feelings for children or other men.

I’m very sorry to hear this. It must be a very painful thing for your community. I can’t imagine what this would be like. Everyone involved is in my prayers.

Peace and God bless!

I doubt those scandals were on the scale of what took place within our church.

In terms of scale as a percentage it has been just as bad, unfortunately. The Roman Church is just far, far bigger than even the largest Orthodox Church. The Greek Orthodox Church has been especially hard hit in recent years.

No sense getting into details, since this isn’t the topic of the thread, but if you have a mind to check out the links I provided you’ll find just the beginning. 😦

Peace and God bless!

Our parish is a mission parish, and he was the first priest for the mission. I only started attending after the new priest arrived. The subject is never discussed at the church, and I think very few people even know about it, especially since most of our parishoners arrived after he left. It only was later, in reading about him online, that I discovered the details.
