Is Director Martian Scorsese for or against Catholics?

Is the movie, “Silence” good for or bad for Catholics?

I’ve never seen Silence…

I’d say he is mostly against though. He made the Last Temptation of Christ.

OTOH, he did used to want to be a priest. I’m not sure what stopped him.

I have not seen most of his movies and am still processing what Silence meant.

Ah…sorry. I don’t even watch that many films these days.

I think Catholicism influences a lot of his motifs and artistry, but he deals in a lot of dark subject matter (he’s probably most famous for violent or mafia films, like Taxi Driver and Good Fellas)… Some of the more sinister characters reach a just end, but they kind of become anti-heroes rather than villains.

And his “Last Temptation” is straight up blasphemous. It was originally based off of an equally controversial novel, written by an ex-Orthodox Greek writer. It’s about the “last temptation” Satan offers to Christ, as he’s dying on the cross. I’ve seen it, but I’d steer clear.

It’s a movie. It was based on a 1966 novel that had already been made into a previous Japanese film in 1971, and a Portuguese film in 1996, and a Japanese opera in 2000, and several stage plays, and also inspired a symphony by a Scottish composer.

Given that it’s been out there getting adapted all over the world for such a long time, it’s a bit silly to start worrying now about whether it’s “bad for Catholics” that Scorsese made a version. I doubt very much he was trying to make any statement on Catholicism given that this novel has been getting adapted to stage and screen for decades before Scorsese decided to make a version.

So is this Scorsese actually trying to do something heartfelt for once? Hmm…

It is a movie that I bought, it is very difficult to watch (knowing that these persecutions are a real, very dark part, of Japanese history).

In many ways the persecution seemed as it was pro catholic … but the way the two Priests at the end were … made me want to pray harder for our Priests!

The impression I get is that he does believe in Catholicism, but he struggles. It’s definitely had a profound effect on his art.

“Silence” is a masterpiece, FWIW.

Well, we all struggle.

I think we’ve all wondered at some point if we would be able to stand by our faith in the face of torture or imminent death, or the torture or imminent death of our loved ones.

The film also raises the question, which is worse, to willing accept persecution or to watch others be persecuted.

Wow! Doesn’t God watch all of be persecuted? Isn’t Blessed Virgin Mother Mary the Queen of witnessing persecution?
