If Mary was sinless, did she need Jesus to die on the cross for her salvation? Did Mary need Jesus for her redemption? Did the crucifixion of her son do anything for her?

Hi Fox!

Mary is a human being and therefore dependent on God’s action in Jesus. Not simply Mary as a person, but Mary as a member of humankind depended upon Him. Human nature itself was fallen. It makes no difference what the time sequence was. Chronologically Abraham and Isaac predated Jesus but they no less depend for their salvation on Jesus.

An innocent baby might die sinless as may a mentally handicapped person, but their eternal happiness, their salvation if you wish, their belonging to redeemed human nature, is owed to Jesus. If Mary chose not to sin, that doesn’t make her less human nor less a recipient of the joy of heaven due to God’s incarnation and redemption in Jesus

Mary was only without original sin because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Since God is outside of time, Jesus death, retroactively cleansed Mary of original sin before it stained her.

If he hadn’t died, her original sin would not have been forgiven.

This is one of the Mysteries that human beings cannot fully comprehend.

On a side note:That’s why time travel messes things up in movies and tv. Where did the watch come from in “Somewhere in time” Elise gave it to Richard, but she got it from him when he went back in time. No one ever purchased it, or even made it. It always was, and always will be.

From what I understand the merits of Jesus’s death and resurrection are not bound by the date of the occurance, they are available at any point in time God decides to use it. God could indeed use the merit of His son’s death to Mary at her conception though for us on earth the event has not yet happened.
