That is a very good article. Thanks for posting it. I have never had a problem seeing Mary as the Ark of the Covenant before or after Jesus was born.

Another symbol or type of Mary is the gate of the temple.

Ezekiel 44:1
“Then he brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces east; and it was shut. 2 And he said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut. 3 Only the prince may sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way.”

Mary is important precisely because Jesus is important.

I wonder if it was ‘deigned’ that the Ark and indeed the Old Covenant should go ‘missing’, since to have two Arks would have been to have an ‘embarrassment of riches’ - that Mary was the fulfilment of the duty of the Ark, much as Jesus was/is the fulfilment of the ‘Old Promise’ itself?

In the Temple period, the Ark of the Covenant could be approached by the High Priest with the blood of the sacrificed lamb in the Holy of Holies only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). And it was only on this day that the Divine presence manifested itself between the two Cherubs on the ark. It was the most sacred object in the tabernacle throughout the year, not only when God manifested Himself. Mary’s womb which was kept in the tabernacle of her body was still sacred without the Divine presence actually manifesting itself in it at a given time, for it was still God’s sacred dwelling place. Nothing profane or unholy could make physical contact with the new Ark of the Covenant at any time. So I can’t imagine Mary having conceived any children with the stain of original sin by having had marital relations with Joseph.
