Mary as Perpetual Virgin

James,
You are right of course, to a point, regarding that Joseph was told by the angel of the Blessedness of Mary’s situation. But I would hold that she alone had the complete grasp of what was happening since it was occurring within her own body in a very miraculous fashion.
Yes, Joseph was made fully aware, but to some degree I liken that to us men saying how incredible it is to bring forth life in our own children. It is beautiful, but we can never fully comprehend the wonder and closeness that our wives experience for 9 months. Now, imagine how that wonder and closeness would be magnified for the BVM, in her knowing that she was carrying the Son of God.

As for the rest of your post–thank you for having the courage to ask what I have always wondered about when discussing Mary’s perpetual virginity with those who would mock it-- your last 2 paragraphs above say it all. I can only WONDER why ANYONE would think anything else !!!
For some the doctrine is seen as ‘just another Catholic dogma’ that must be proven wrong, if for no other reason than that it is a Catholic belief.

I have asked many times, here on this forum and elsewhere,
“WHY do you feel a need to question Mary’s perpetual virginity ?”
I have never gotten an answer to that question .
Have to wonder about their agenda…
+Peace,
Bob
Bob,
Thank you for your kind post. I agree that Mary’s and Joseph’s understandings and views were somewhat different, just as yours and mine are somewhat different.
Mainly what I wanted to bring out was the common sense of the situation that Joseph found himself in and accepted.
Of course it seems that some people prefer to ignore common sense and continue to pick this and that nit from the bible apart to try and prove she did not remain a virgin. 🤷

Peace
James

James,
You did the best job I have ever seen of pointing out the common sense of the situation , in 2 short paragraphs, especially your last line !

I am still waiting for an answer as to WHY anyone would challenge the fact in the first place. Myself, I’d be embarrassed, if nothing else…

For all you guys ( Catholic and non-Catholic alike ), who are laboring over long treatises and parsing scripture to bits in every possible way trying to prove this one way or the other, PLEASE do yourselves a favor and go back and read JRKH’s post # 75. We tend to make things more complicated than they really are…
