Mary as the New Eve

A Protestant pointed out to me that Jesus not only calls His Mother “woman,” but He also calls the adulterer in John 8 “woman.” Therefore there’s nothing special about Jesus calling a woman “woman.” This is probably the best argument I’ve seen from Protestants against the idea of Mary being the New Eve.

That Mary is called “woman” is definitely significant, but the case can be easily made for Mary being the New Eve without that point. There are many more extremely compelling parallels. But, as this video I will link points out, what supports the significance of Christ calling Mary “woman” is because, while it is normal for him to call the other women “woman”, it stands out in Mary’s case because it is very strange for a person to call his mother “woman”. We have no other biblical example (nor any example in any ancient Hebrew/Aramaic literature, I believe) of a son calling his mother “woman”.

One possible rebuttal I’ve thought of was that the adulteress was to remain anonymous in the gospels. Maybe the writers (or Jesus) didn’t want to reveal her name?

As been said, the reason for Mary as the new Eve, is not because of Jesus calling her woman. Yes, it can be one of the points in the argument, but it is in the context of the parallels between Mary and Eve, which the adulterous woman does not have (parallel with Mary).

So, the parallels between Mary and Eve are the main reasons.

Eve Becomes the “Mother of All the Living” / New Eve Becomes the “Mother of All Who Live in Christ”

Before the Fall, Adam simply referred to Eve as Woman. However, after the Fall, Adam names his wife Eve, because she is the “mother of all living.”8

It follows that if Mary is the New Eve, then she would be the “Mother of All Who Live in Christ,” or the “Mother of All Who Truly Live.” There are however several biblical traits to support this logical assumption. The first is that like Adam, Christ does not refer to Mary as “Mary” or even “Mother,” but refers to her as “Woman.”9 The most important circumstance in which this title “Woman” was used was when Christ was on the Cross.

_ When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold you son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home._

It is extremely important to observe that when Christ refers to his relationship with Mary he says “Woman,” which invokes Adam’s pre-Fall title for Eve, but when he refers to the disciple’s relationship with Mary he uses the title “Mother.” Tradition tells us that St. John took Mother Mary into his home in Ephesus and cared for her until the Assumption. Christ called the disciples “brothers,” he told them that God was their “Father,” and he gave Mary to them as their “Mother.” Though popular, it is absurd to believe that Christ gave us a Father, gave himself as the Son or our Brother, and completely left out any maternal figure.
