I am a convert. Much of my family are evangelical Christians. They don’t understand Our Lady. How do you explain Mary to non-Catholics?

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Julie

I usually discuss the Old Testament and the ark of the covenant and then show how Mary was the ark of the new covenant. If you base your argument biblically it helps with evangelicals. I also point out that the Hail Mary is just a recitation of scripture.

There’s a book by Charles Dickson called “A Protestant Pastor Looks At Mary”.

It’s a good book, and may be helpful to you.

I think it’s probably out of print but used copies are available on Amazon.

Are they asking questions? Or are you doing your own outreach regarding the Blessed Mother?

There are a lot of Catholic apologetics websites online like Catholic Answers (catholic.com). Just type your topic about Mary and you’ll probably find it there.

If they are evangelical you have to use the Bible. So go over the verses that have Mary on them, and discuss her role, the reverence she was showed and the prominence she had. Like the miracle at Cana, what does it mean that this miracle was granted through her intercession?

The ejaculation of Mary being the Ark of the Covenant shows how central her role is in the plan of salvation. I’ll leave this here. Luke knew what he was doing when writing the Gospel and speaking of Mary

Also God literally spoke of her in Genesis after the fall of Adam and Eve.
Genesis 3:15 says I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.
Since I follow the Douay Rheims version which is derived from Jerome’s translation of the Latin Vulgate aka The official language of the Church It’s safe to say Mary is more important than we will ever know this side of Heaven. Gen 3:15 in many bibles that have been translated and “protestantized” will replace the ‘she’ with ‘he’. Not inherently bad but it really undermines Mary’s Role as the New eve.

Dissing someone’s mother is not generally the way to win favor.

No they are not asking questions, but one family member is very dogmatic about everyone having to be a Protestant. I will be visiting them (they live hundreds of miles away) in the near future, and if I see that particular person, I want to have good answers. I am a convert (2009) and Mary is one aspect of Catholicism that attracted me. I have always loved Our Lady, even when I was a Protestant.

My advice, smile and say “Jesus loved His mother and I love her too”. Don’t debate, don’t try to prove your relative wrong. Debate skills never won anyone, love is the most important thing.
