“I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault in my thoughts and in my words and in what I have failed to do, and I ask Blessed Mary ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.”
So, there is confession to God and to one another (just as scripture commands) as well as request for prayer from the full communion of saints whether living or in heaven.
It is not always easy to see what people pray even if they are in front of the Virgin Mary statue. I can speak for myself in this case. Although, I come to ask Virgin Mary to pray for me, but I always pray to God even if I don’t have to kneel in front of a tabernacle.
Secondly, we don’t stay with the people who pray all the time and don’t know what else or where else they would go to pray. For example, at the end of the mass, I like to come over to Virgin Mary to pray and ask her for her intercession. Does this mean I don’t pray to God? Sure, I do pray to God. Remember that the mass was just finished. I have Jesus in me - I took His Body and Blood into my soul.
Another example that is the other way around - When I go to mass, I pray to God for a few minutes then I come over to Virgin Mary to pray. …and you happen to come in and see me over at the statue of Virgin Mary praying. Would you say I that I forgot about God? You may, but is this true? No - Remember that the mass is going to start soon, and my whole time during the mass is for God.
So, this is just to name a few that we can’t always know who pray what or why.
