Mary has two spouses?

This is something that I have been struggling with lately to come up with an answer to- how can Mary be married to both Joseph and the Holy Spirit? I understand that they are married in different ways, but married nonetheless.

When people use the expression “Mary, spouse of the Holy Spirit” it is an expression, an analogy. It is not literally a marriage. Its kind of like if we said someone was “married to his job.” It doesn’t literally mean the man is married to his job, its an expression of his dedication and commitment to the job. Mary as “spouse of the Holy Spirit” is an expression of Mary’s holiness.
