Since Mary was a Virgin her entire life, wouldn’t that mean her marriage was never consummated? If so, doesn’t this render the marriage invalid?

In Christ,

Andrew

As I understand the marriage was a form we no longer have today:
Joseph was a carpenter, therefor no longer an apprentice so he would have been rather aged (for the time at least), and it was custom for older men to marry women who wanted to be Religious to protect and care for them. As even then there were those who devoted themselves to God.

No.

Abstaining from sex for any period of time by mutual consent is not sinful.

Jesus refers to the Church as His “bride”. He speaks of the wedding feast in Heaven. Considering your statement, how then do you suppose that this marriage between the Lamb of God and the Church will not be invalid?

That isn’t an image I want to ponder.

Mary and Joseph did not have a sacramental marriage. The were married in the Jewish tradition of the old covenant. Jesus had not yet established the Catholic Church, so they did not have sacraments. A sacrament can’t be invalid if there is no sacrament to begin with 🙂

I think this posting brings up a good issue to meditate on, “What is the role of sexuality in our marriages.”

Marriage being a sacrament for spouses to help each other achieve God’s Grace in their lives, the Holy family exemplified this perfectly. Our sexuality is a way of the two becoming one, and bringing forth Love - at times that Love is a child. The marriage of Mary and Joseph brought forth Total Love.

I believe it was in Christpher West’s explaination of the Theology of the Body that he explains our maritial unions point toward our union with the Trinity.

Since Our Blessed Mother and Joseph were so united in their earthly life, maritial union would not have been needed for them to bring Grace into their marriage.
God Bless,

Why doesn’t Catholic Answers get it right. Joseph was 30 yrs old when he married the Holy Mother, who was 15. He had taken a vow of chasity when he was 15. Mary had no idea of this until after the wedding when they both confided their vows of chasity to each other, Joseph was in awe of Her, and this started a most special contest of humility to each other but as the Holy Mother was the queen of humilty she usually outdid him. If any of you really want to know the most exacting story of Her then the ONLY book which covers this is “The City of God”, by Sister Mary of Agreda, written in the 17th century, imprinateured (sp) by Bishops and Popes. You can not read this book and come away unchanged, it was given to her through inner locutions, from the Lord and our Lady herself. This is 4 volumes long and covers the Holy mother from Conception until the Crowning in Heaven, with insights and information that will blow you away.

Pray for us Holy Mother and forgive those who desecrate your most holy Shrine in Fatima.
