Not sure where this belongs so I am in the “Water Cooler”!!
Was Mary M. a prostitute? I have searched scripture and can’t find anything on this notion. I know she was possessed by demons, but wondered where this idea of her being a prostitute came from!
Inquiring minds want the answer!

Some early Bible scholars thought that she was the woman of sin who came to Jesus to anoint his body because Mary M. anointed him as the unnamed woman did. I used this idea when I put together a scriptural Rosary devotion a few years ago.

Others think that she was the woman caught in adultery. But, since the Gospel accounts didn’t give us her name, we can’t really make that assumption. I know Mel Gibson went with that idea, but that was poetic license which isn’t without supporters from some Bible scholars.

From everything I have heard and read, I believe you are correct in your conclusion that there is nothing in the Bible that identifies Mary Magdalene as a prosititute. I have not heard any good explanations of where that “tradition” grew out of, but I tend to believe one of our scripture scholars here will provide some valuable (name removed by moderator)ut.

Many mystics say she was the prostitute…but I dont know how much the Church herself has influenced those mystics in having that opinion.

Fr. Corapi had some interesting stuff to say about this. He says she was not only a prostitute, but one of the worst. He said people come up to him and say he can’t say she was a prostitute because that is ruining her reputation. But he says that’s what makes her one of the greatest saints and a great example for us all. No one is too sinful to repent and be forgiven. It’s possible for anyone to go from the bottom of the barrell to holiness. That should give everyone great hope.

I forget where I heard this, but I think Magdala was a big military camp and many prostitutes “worked” around there and this combined with her seven devils is one reason leading to the belief in her being a prostitute

That is why I brought it up because I heard Father Corapi state that she was a prostitute. Can’t remember where he got the information however. By the way I like his teachings and his “tell it like it is” approach. We need more priests like him!!!
God bless…
